This is one of the most excruciating ways to lose. During Sunday’s match between PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord, there was a controversial goal scored in the 82nd minute. You can see the replay of it at 0:28 in the video below:
Dutch goalkeeper makes save, then commits agonizing own goal to lose game
At first glance, it looked like Eindhoven’s Jan-Arie van der Heijden was solely responsible for the goal thanks to his header, and the goal decision system seemed to confirm that was the case. Here’s the broadcast showing that the ball fully crossed the line by one millimeter.
But upon closer look, it was actually PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet’s fault. Here’s the goal again: After he seemingly got control of the ball, Zoet pulled it over the line. When that moment happened, that’s when the system signaled a goal.
As you can imagine Zoet was angry about this, according to Goal.com:
“This is seriously f***** up”, Zoet told NOS. “The goal line technology made the difference and things could have been different if it had not.
”He went only by his watch. If that had not happened, I think he would have said no goal.
The 2-1 loss hurt PSV’s chances at becoming back-to-back Eredivisie champions (they’re currently third), while Feyenoord continues to sit mightily at the top of the league.
