Erie Community College was playing Dakota College when Erie freshman Brandon Day left the box and charged towards an official, leveling him with a cheap shot. The incident ended the game as the referee lay motionless on the ice while being attended to by trainers.
Day was taken into custody and charged with assault for attacking the official. Dakota College went on to win the championship 7-4 and the NJCAA issued the following statement to WKBW Buffalo.
”The NJCAA national office has been made aware of the incident that occurred during its hockey championship game and will take all necessary steps to gather as much information from tournament officials and local authorities regarding violations to the association’s sportsmanship code. This type of behavior will not be tolerated in the NJCAA.”
The case is still under investigation, and Day remained in police custody as of 9 p.m. on Sunday night.
