Monopoly is changing forever. Hasbro announced on Friday that three pieces are being axed and replaced with new designs. We knew the thimble was going, per an announcement in February. But now it’s being joined by the wheelbarrow and the boot.
Monopoly’s replacing 3 classic pieces with 2 good animals and a trash T. Rex

The replacement pieces? A penguin, a rubber duck, and a T. Rex.
Penguin: Good.
Duck: Good.
T. Rex: Total trash.
Dinosaurs are friggin’ awesome and T. Rex are the best, but this design is really bad. Monopoly is about slick, cute looking things, not real-looking dinosaurs. Hasbro knocked it out of the park with the other two, but this lizard will not do. Now I understand that the dog is realistic looking, but it’s a dog. There are levels here.
Granted, most of my anger about this is due to the fact that the loaf of bread wasn’t chosen (clearly the best option), but still.
We now have distinct groupings of Monopoly pieces, and they’re all jacked up.
- The Animal group: Dog, cat, penguin, T. Rex, rubber duck.
- The Vehicle group: Battleship, car
- The Hat group: Top hat.
We have a big-time imbalance. Monopoly axed three inanimate objects for three animals, without adequate replacements. This just isn’t right.
