A 5-year-old from Oklahoma didn’t just prove she was the best speller in her region, she did something historic over the weekend.
Incredible 5-year-old to become youngest-ever competitor in National Spelling Bee

Edith Fuller will be heading to Washington D.C. to take part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee after beating 50 competitors in her county regional by spelling the word “jnana,” a Hindu word meaning “knowledge acquired through meditation and study as a means of reaching Brahman.”
On her path to victory Edith also spelled odori, colloquial, and sevruga correctly as the crowd-favorite took home the crown. Speaking to Tulsa World, her mother Anne was extremely proud that her daughter went toe-to-toe with the other spellers.
“It’s fun to share her with everyone,” said her mother, Annie Fuller. “I knew she’d be a novelty, so I’m proud she held her own.”
The national bee is going to be difficult, but already making the dance this early means Edith’s spelling career is just beginning.
