Pittsburgh is mourning the loss of Dan Rooney, the Steelers owner who died on Thursday at 84. The Steelers aren’t alone in their remembrance of Rooney, who later became U.S. ambassador to Ireland under Barack Obama. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Pitt’s football team have found their ways to pay respects to the Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Penguins and Pitt football will honor the late Dan Rooney with helmet decals
Rooney entered the Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Penguins honored Rooney on Friday in their playoff game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a special decal on their helmets. The emblem features the Steelers logo with “Dan Rooney 1932-2017” around it.
Our players will wear this helmet in tomorrow's Spring Game to pay our respects to a great man, Mr. Dan Rooney. #PittsburghLegend pic.twitter.com/yFNFT56ZaI

Pitt is doing something similar on Saturday for the football team’s spring game. They will also be wearing an emblem to honor Rooney, but they’re opting for the Steelers logo on the right side of their gold helmets.
Rooney changed the NFL in many ways, most notably through the Rooney Rule and the way he negotiated labor deals with players, making sure everyone was heard.
