The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, a Double-A affiliate for the Miami Marlins, are proving that minor league promotions are horrible with their “You Might Be The Father’s Day!”
Minor league team offers free pregnancy tests on bizarre Maury-themed promo night

Fans in attendance on Thursday, June 15 will be given free pregnancy tests at the gate for some unknown reason. Here’s how the team is describing it:
“In honor of You Might Be The Father’s Day, the Jumbo Shrimp will be distributing pregnancy tests so you’ll know if you need to return for Sunday’s Father’s Day game... It will be an evening filled with suspense, intrigue and manila envelopes.”
Aside from this being weird and semi-creepy, it also makes no dang sense. The concept of the night is a riff on Maury Povich doing his on-air paternity reveals on TV, but the difference between that concept and what the Jumbo Shrimp are doing is that the baseball team isn’t offering paternity tests, they’re just offering pregnancy tests.
Peeing on a stick isn’t going to tell anyone who the father is. Furthermore, the conceit that finding out if you’re going to be a dad so you can return on Father’s Day assumed the baby will be born in 10 days. Hopefully you know if you’re significant other is going to have a baby at the nine month mark.
That said, it’s ALSO “Thirsty Thursday” on the same evening and there will be cheap beer, so perhaps “You Might Be The Father’s Day!” will lead to “You’re Going To Be A Father’s Day!”
Alternatively we could lay off the weird promotional nights, Minor League Baseball.
