Colin Kaepernick has donated $700K of his $1 million pledge to 24 different organizations
Colin Kaepernick is currently a free agent, but he’s been busy lately. Since pledging to donate $1 million of his salary to various charities in the wake of his national anthem protests, Kaepernick has donated $700,000 so far. This week, he announced the latest round of organizations that he’ll be donating to: American Friends Service Committee, Assata’s Daughters, Grassroots Leadership, and Helping Oppressed Mothers Endure. Much like the 20 other organizations he’s donated to, they’ll each get a portion of the $100,000 he’s been pledging each month.
Kaepernick has been a lightning rod of controversy since he made news with his national anthem protest. The NFL remains divided on whether to sign him -- Giants owner John Mara said he’s been receiving mail from fans who don’t want their team to sign him, while Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had high praise for Kaepernick, saying he’s “a starter in this league.” Kaepernick worked out with the Seahawks this week for a potential job, but it remains to be seen if that will evolve into a signing.
Despite the drama surrounding Kaepernick’s future in the NFL, it’s clear the impact he cares about the most is the one he’s making with fans around the country. It’s tangible — from the rally in New York City, to handing out suits outside a parole office, to receiving boxes upon boxes of supportive letters. It’s easy to imagine that his activism will continue even after he’s done donating $1 million of his salary, that even if he won’t kneel during the national anthem anymore, he’ll do what he can to keep the conversation going.
