Here are our 6 favorite power couples in pro sports

Hello, these couples are incredible.

A “power couple” is defined as a couple consisting of two people who are each influential or successful in their own right. Jay-Z and Beyonce, Barack and Michelle, and Chrissy Teigen and John Legend all top the charts in the power couple category, but what about power couples who are exclusively in sports? Specifically pro sports, with both members of the couple being a professional athlete. There are plenty of athletes with power partners in their own right. Take the incredible Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union for example. But we’re talking sports only here.

So are power couples, sports? Yes, they are.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe

Sue and Megan officially met while they were competing for their respective Olympic teams in Brazil during the 2016 Summer Olympics, which as far as meet-cutes go is a pretty perfect story. How can anyone else even top: “Well, we both have gold medals and were just hanging out in a foreign country being amazing athletes when we hit it off.”

We should all be so lucky.

Not only have they both competed in the Olympics and won at the highest levels of their respective sports, they are also pillars of their teams whether it be a National team or their professional teams in the States. They are genuinely lovely people by all accounts, which makes this pairing even more great and heartwarming.

Jrue and Lauren Holiday

Lauren and Jrue became friends in 2008 when they were both attending UCLA and later began to date after Jrue left for the NBA. Lauren is best known as a former member of the US Women’s National Soccer Team, where she won the 2014 US Female Athlete of the Year award, while Jrue is currently the starting point guard for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Before Lauren retired, Jrue was always a noted USWNT fan. I mean, just look at him here at the World Cup in 2015 supporting Lauren:

Jrue also missed the beginning of the 2016-2017 NBA season to help Lauren, as she was diagnosed with a brain tumor while pregnant with their first child. Doctors were unable to operate on the tumor until after Lauren had the baby, so Jrue chose to stay home to be there through the tough situation. Lauren and the baby are now both healthy, and my goodness, no wonder we love this couple so much.

Dom and Sydney Leroux-Dwyer

Dom and Sydney have been dating since 2014, and they are both dominant soccer players in the U.S. Sydney professionally plays for FC Kansas City and was a member of the USWNT, winning in 2012 at the London Olympics and the 2015 World Cup. Dom is a forward for Sporting Kansas City and a member of the USMNT.

Dom and Sydney met in 2014 and ... LOOK AT THEIR DOG. This is a good dog:

You also may remember this famous picture from 2015 after the USWNT won the World Cup:

Sydney and Dom also had their first son, Cassius Cruz Dwyer, in Sept. 2016, and the three immediately dressed as Aladdin, Jasmine, and Abu. Perfect:

Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton

Ashton and Brianne are both retired Olympic athletes, and they began dating while both going to school at the University of Oregon. Ashton is a two-time Olympic champion and holds the world record for the decathlon and indoor heptathlon events. Brianne won the Gold Medal in the heptathlon at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

They even had their own commercial together heading into the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Ashton and Brianne married in 2013 and ... OH LOOK ANOTHER POWER COUPLE WITH ANOTHER GOOD DOG:

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf

Long before Andre Agassi had problems applying sun tan lotion while watching Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, he married fellow tennis star Steffi Graf. He also did a bunch of other impressive stuff like win eight majors, 60 total career titles, and 870 total matches in his time on tour.

But that’s not what we’re here about. We’re here about his marriage to Graf, who was no slouch during her time on the courts either. In fact, she smokes his slam title count with 22 of her own, not to mention the unprecedented (and still unmatched) Golden Slam of 1988 when she won every Major tournament plus took home a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics. For kicks, she added another Major title and Olympic medal in doubles as well, losing only three matches all year.

Which is probably why it’s so fun to consider that this couple actually exists. They’ve been married since 2001 and have two kids together and are now content to watch some tennis, coach when they feel like it, and film some commercials together on top of that. If your marriage consists of two Hall of Fame athletes with trophies out the wazoo, that’s exactly the way you should be treating retirement.

Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm

You forgot about these two, didn’t you? Nomar and Mia also fall into the Andre/Steffi category in that they just look like they are having so much fun being married and hanging out after retiring from baseball and soccer, respectively.

Although Nomar doesn’t technically have a championship (we still think of that 2004 trade sometimes too), he did get a World Series ring from Boston, and Mia has two World Cup wins and two gold medals to her name. One of Nomar’s best moments on the Red Sox related directly to his relationship with Hamm, as he refused to shave his head during the 2003 “Cowboy Up!” season because his wedding was only a few months away.

Now that’s commitment, to your future wife and to keeping those wedding photos classy.

Even though they still dip their toes in the pro sports world in various ways, whether that be with jobs in the media or philanthropic efforts, it’s nice to see two fun former pro athletes be content to be a normal, dorky married couple together.
