We don’t get to see backboards shatter very often anymore, but Michael Hayes, a high school senior out of Merrill West High School in California gave us one to close 2017.
This high school player shattered the backboard and made us feel like it’s the 90s again
Yes!

The reason we see fewer backboard shatters now compared to the early 90s is the advent of breakaway rims, which took pressure off the glass of the backboard and put it into the armature of the hoop itself. However, these still aren’t in every high school — which leads to stuff like this.
You can see from the photo and how the glass broke that the rim was mounted directly to the glass, which allowed this to happen. Still though, it’s nice to see that backboard shatters can still happen. Makes you feel like a kid again.
