Smash Mouth tried to start beef with Myles Garrett

Hey now,

James Dator
James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.

Myles Garrett stirred up a hornets nest when he criticized Kevin Durant for joining the Warriors, and it took approximately 18 hrs before this:

Though Smash Mouth eventually deleted the tweet.

What the heck is going on?

Myles Garrett plays for the Cleveland Browns. This has made him a Cavaliers fan by osmosis, and spent much of the NBA Finals tweeting about the Cavs.

Smash Mouth are established defenders of Bay Area sports. They’ll tweet about the Athletics and Warriors whenever they have the chance. Particularly if games involves all stars, and there’s a game on.

So, when Myles Garrett said this:

“With KD, you just stick him in, and he scores,” Garrett said. “You already knew what they had. They were 73-9 before, and you put the second-best player in the world on an already all-time great team, and of course you’re going to have success, pretty easy success. Anyone can have an off night and they can still find a way to win.”

Smash Mouth decided they needed to defend Durant — and the attempted beef was on.

A close reading of the Smash Mouth tweet.

In order to understand Smash Mouth’s quarrels we need to dive into their ramblings.

“Hey Myles Garrett,.....nobody knows who the F you are”

This is a demonstrably false statement. Not only do many people know who Myles Garrett is — clearly Smash Mouth do as well, hence calling him out by name.

“so nobody gives a F what you would do.”

Browns fans care very much what he does. Also he had 7.0 sacks last year. I care about that.

“And Genius the @warriors didn’t win the Championship the season before KD signed.”

Garrett never said this. His actual quote referred to KD joining an already successful team, not a championship team.

“So not sure what “coattails” you’re referring to.”

Probably Steph Curry’s? I mean it’s a harsh take — but the Warriors did go 73-9 before KD arrived.

“This your Twitter page Aaaaahole? @MylesLGarrett”

You can literally click on it dudes.

Garrett didn’t directly respond, but he didn’t seemed bothered by it.

And Smash Mouth approved:

So in the end, this didn’t come close to getting as savage as the great Smash Mouth vs. Athletics beef of 2016.
