And the top of the sixth did not go the Rays' way. There were two on and one out when Ian Kinsler bounced a could-be 4-6-3 double play grounder to second. The throw to second was fine, but the throw to first was ruled late, allowing Kinsler to reach. More importantly, on the same play, Vladimir Guerrero - who started at second base - sprinted to third, rounded the bag, and sprinted home, once again scoring ahead of David Price's throw to Kelly Shoppach.
Rays Vs. Rangers, ALDS Game 5: Vladimir Guerrero Adds To Ranger Lead With Baserunning Of His Own
It's the second time the Rangers have scored on the same kind of play, and the third time they've crossed the plate on aggressive baserunning. That made it 3-1 Texas, and the Rays really couldn't afford to cough up any insurance.
It’s worth noting that the play was not without it’s controversy. First base umpire Mike DiMuro ruled that the relay throw to first on Kinsler’s grounder was late, but replays showed that Price - who was covering the bag - may have caught the ball before Kinsler arrived. Had DiMuro called Kinsler out, the run wouldn’t have scored. It’s possible that Price’s foot was off the base when he caught the ball, and that angle wasn’t shown.
