Jeffrey Maier Now Has A Crassly Gesturing Partner In History

5zmqvp_medium

The first run scored in Game 4 of the ALCS might end up being the most controversial in all of the 2010 MLB postseason. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Robinson Cano drilled a ball to the right field fence. Nelson Cruz appeared to have a chance to get the ball at the wall, but a Yankees fan reached over his glove to snatch it away.

↵The umpires declined to review the play, which was ruled a home run. Though it was clear that the fan reached over Cruz’s glove, it wasn’t as clear whether Cruz’s glove was out of play when the interference occurred. According to the rulebook, it’s not fan interference if a player reaches over a fence to catch the ball. Still, the play should have merited at least a review.

↵

The obvious first association to this incident is Jeffrey Maier, who is right up there with Steve Bartman in terms of the most famous fan interferences in the history of the League Championship Series. Maier grabbed a ball away from Baltimore Orioles outfielder Tony Tarasco in Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS at Yankees Stadium. At least Maier, unlike this soon-to-be identified Yankees fan, had the courtesy not to flip off Tarasco after he did it, though.
