After Buster Posey was able to extend the Giants lead to 2-0 in the third, Madison Bumgarner came out and escaped a jam in the fourth against the meat of the Phillies order.
Phillies Vs. Giants, NLCS Game 4: Madison Bumgarner, Joe Blanton Work Scoreless Fourth
After a leadoff fly out, Placido Polanco singled to left and Ryan Howard drew a walk to put two on with one out. Jayson Werth came up and lined a ball hard into right field, but he hit it straight to Cody Ross, who made an easy catch for the second out. Jimmy Rollins then stood in and watched as Bumgarner dropped in a 2-2 backdoor slider over the outer half to end the threat. The strikeout was Bumgarner's sixth in four innings.
In better news for the Phillies, Joe Blanton responded by going 1-2-3. Cody Ross and Pablo Sandoval each made outs on two pitches, and Aaron Rowand grounded out on the third.
So we go to the fifth inning with the score 2-0 San Francisco. Bumgarner has thrown 68 pitches, against just 50 from Blanton.
