Earlier Wednesday morning, word spread that the Brewers and Bobby Valentine had reached an agreement that would bring the popular managerial candidate on board to replace the departed Ken Macha. However, the rumor couldn’t be immediately confirmed, and now Adam McCalvy says the following:
Bobby Valentine May Not Have Agreement With Brewers After All
A Brewers spokesperson said he knew nothing of an agreement with Valentine or anybody else. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has been conducting his search behind closed doors and did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
This comes around the same time that Jon Heyman tweeted that no agreement was in place. Heyman referred to the possibility of Valentine ending up in Milwaukee as “a major coup”.
The Brewers, as McCalvy said, are doing everything behind closed doors. For that reason, we shouldn’t expect them to confirm something that isn’t yet official, and it’s possible that the spokesperson denied any knowledge of an agreement because Valentine and the organization are still working out a few details. However, based on McCalvy’s report and Heyman’s tweet, it seems the two sides are, at best, still a little ways apart, if they’re close at all.
In other words, nothing appears to be imminent, and other candidates like Bob Melvin and Joey Cora may very well remain in the mix.
