The Giants were preparing for the top of the ninth to be stressful. They had Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo warming up and everything. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, they scored a run. And they scored another run. And they scored another two runs. And they scored another two runs. And they scored another run. And a close game was a nine-run game, and there was no stress remaining at all.
World Series Game 2, Rangers Vs. Giants: Guillermo Mota Finishes Off Blowout Win
So rather than call on Wilson or Romo, Bruce Bochy called on Guillermo Mota to make his first appearance in the playoffs. And though there's a reason why Mota hadn't yet appeared in a game in the playoffs, even the lousiest of all pitchers will generally be capable of handling a nine-run lead.
Mota started off by getting Nelson Cruz to ground out weakly. Up next, Ian Kinsler lifted an easy fly into right field. Mota then walked David Murphy on eight pitches, suggesting that pitchers can't throw consistent strikes even when there's no reason at all to try and be tricky, but Jeff Francoeur wrapped it up with a harmless fly into right.
9-0 Giants, with the final score in no way reflecting the tightness of the game. The Giants have, at the very least, ensured a trip back home for Game 6, and remain on pace for a four-game sweep. Saturday's Game 3 will pit Jonathan Sanchez against Colby Lewis as the Rangers try like hell to get things going on their own field.
