2010 MLB Playoff Schedule: LDS Scenarios And Schedules

I feel it’s our duty to try and get everyone all up to speed as we enter the regular season’s final day. What are the Division Series scenarios we’re dealing with? Onward.

The American League picture is pretty simple. As we already knew, the Twins will play the AL Wild Card, while the Rangers will play the winner of the AL East. The Rays will win the AL East with a win, or with a loss and a Yankees loss. The only way for the Yankees to win the AL East is if they beat the Red Sox on Sunday, and the Rays lose to the Royals.

It’s in the National League that things get complicated. That’s what happens when you have five teams in the picture on the final day, with three times tied at 90-71 and another team at 91-70. I’ll do my best:

  • If the Braves beat the Phillies, and the Giants beat the Padres, the Phillies will play the Reds, and the Giants will play the Braves
  • If the Phillies beat the Braves and the Padres beat the Giants, the Phillies will play the Giants, and the Padres will play the Reds
  • If the Phillies beat the Braves and the Giants beat the Padres, then the Padres will meet the Braves for a one-game playoff in Atlanta. If the Braves win, the Phillies will play the Reds, and the Giants will play the Braves. If the Padres win, the Phillies will play the Padres, and the Giants will play the Reds
  • If the Braves beat the Phillies and the Padres beat the Giants, then, oh man. First, the Padres will play the Giants in a one-game playoff to decide the NL West. The loser of that game will then fly to Atlanta for a one-game playoff to decide the NL Wild Card. If the Braves win, the Phillies will play the Reds, and the Braves will play the NL West winner. If the NL West team wins, the Phillies will play the NL West Wild Card, and the Reds will play the NL West winner.
