Behind 3-0, the Giants were waiting for something to give. Something kind of gave, but not in the way that they wanted.
World Series Game 3, Giants Vs. Rangers: Josh Hamilton Homer Helps Knock Jonathan Sanchez Out
Colby Lewis came out for the top of the fifth and continued to look good. It only took him ten pitches to work another perfect 1-2-3 inning, as Juan Uribe flew out, Pablo Sandoval struck out, and Edgar Renteria grounded out. After a long first, Lewis has thrown only 43 pitches in his last four innings, and he continues to coast by keeping the Giants off balance.
Jonathan Sanchez returned to the mound looking to build off his success in the third and fourth, and he was nearly able to do it - Elvis Andrus led off with a base hit, but Michael Young followed with a grounder to third that Uribe, Freddy Sanchez, and Aubrey Huff were able to turn into a spectacular 5-4-3 double play. That put Jonathan Sanchez an out away from making it through five. But the next batter was Josh Hamilton, and Hamilton blasted a 2-1 slider deep into right field for a solo home run that made it 4-0 Texas.
Vladimir Guerrero followed with a walk, and Bruce Bochy decided that was enough. He replaced Sanchez with reliever Guillermo Mota, and Mota stood in when Buster Posey threw Guerrero out trying to steal.
Sanchez’s line:
4.2 innings
6 hits
4 runs
3 walks
3 strikeouts
72 pitches (43 strikes)
The two big blasts came off the bats of left-handed hitters, which is disconcerting.
