In the bottom of the seventh, behind 4-1, the Giants got what they needed from Jeremy Affeldt in relief. Affeldt got Mitch Moreland to ground out, and after Elvis Andrus singled on a grounder up the middle, Michael Young hit into just another 5-4-3 double play to end the frame. The deficit was preserved, and the Giants still had a chance.
World Series Game 3, Giants Vs. Rangers: Andres Torres Home Run Helps End Colby Lewis’ Night
Off we went to the top of the eighth, where Colby Lewis returned to the mound to build on what was already a gem. And he had a promising start, when Edgar Renteria led off with an easy pop out.
Then the situation got a little more interesting. In a 1-1 count, Lewis threw Andres Torres a low, inside fastball that Torres went down and yanked deep into the right field stands for a solo home run that trimmed the gap to two.
Up next was Freddy Sanchez, and Sanchez ripped a line drive of his own into left that Nelson Cruz was barely able to catch above his head for the second out.
Trying to finish off the frame, Lewis faced Aubrey Huff and quickly got ahead 0-2. But his third pitch was a breaking ball that dove down and in and hit Huff in the foot, bringing the tying run to the plate and bringing Ron Washington out of the dugout to replace Lewis with Darren O'Day. Lewis' effort:
7.2 innings
5 hits
2 runs (so far)
2 walks
6 strikeouts
103 pitches (74 strikes)
