Ben Zobrist put the Rays on the board with a solo homer to right off Cliff Lee in the seventh, and Chad Qualls then shut the Rangers down in the top of the eighth with an easy three-grounder inning.
Rays Vs. Rangers, ALDS Game 1: Cliff Lee’s Afternoon Is Finished After Seven
It’s still 5-1 Texas, but the Rays, at least, now have some glimmer of hope. Either helping or hurting their case (I’m not sure which) is that Ron Washington has taken Lee out of the game and gone to his bullpen, starting with righty Darren O’Day.
Lee’s day:
7 innings
5 hits
1 run
0 walks
10 strikeouts
1 homer
104 pitches
Lee overcame some early jams to finish with some real sexy numbers, and at this point it would take a meltdown on the Rangers’ part in order for the Rays to come out on top.
