2010 N.L. Manager Of The Year Is San Diego’s Bud Black

In what turned out to be a remarkably close contest, San Diego Padres skipper Bud Black was named the 2010 National League Manager of the Year, beating Cincinnati Reds skipper Dusty Baker by one single point.

Black picked up 16 of a possible 32 first-place votes, with Baker getting 13, San Francisco’s Bruce Bochy getting one, Atlanta’s Bobby Cox getting one, and Philadelphia’s Charlie Manuel getting one. The full voting table, courtesy of the BBWAA, can be seen at the end of this post.

Black - who has been with the Padres since 2007 - guided his team to a surprising 90-72 record after most preseason forecasts picked them for dead last. They even held a significant lead in the NL West in late August before a late tailspin knocked them out of the playoffs. Nevertheless, even with the fade, Black’s Padres made an impression and were arguably the story of the year.

It’s the third time in NL Manager of the Year history that the winner has been decided by a single point. It’s also the first Manager of the Year award of Black’s career, and the first Padres winner since Bochy in 1996.
