Reports: Mets To Hire Terry Collins As Next Manager

After a month-long managerial search, the New York Mets have reportedly found their man to replace Jerry Manuel.

Reports from both ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin and Newsday’s David Lennon have the Mets hiring Terry Collins as their next manager.

Collins was one of four candidates reportedly tabbed as finalists for the job, and beat out Bob Melvin, new Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, and Chip Hale for the position.

Collins hasn’t managed an MLB team since 1999, when he skippered the Anaheim Angels. In six seasons of managing the Houston Astros and the Angels, he compiled a 444-434 record.

Collins’ last managerial job was in Japan, where he managed the Orix Buffaloes in 2007 and 2008. He also managed the Chinese team in last year’s World Baseball Classic and served as the Mets’ minor league coordinator this past season.

The Mets hiring Collins may be evidence of Paul DePodesta’s sway in general manager Sandy Alderson’s front office. Collins was once thought to be the next Dodgers manager while DePodesta served as GM, but after DePodesta was fired, Collins’ pipeline to the job dried up.
