Adam Dunn Meets With Oakland A’s As Free Agent Slugger Seeks Multiyear Contract

Free agent slugger Adam Dunn isn’t yet fully committed to the idea of serving as a designated hitter, and has to date drawn only limited interest on the market, but according to Susan Slusser, on Tuesday he met with representatives from the Oakland A’s in Houston. Oakland is evidently considered a serious contender for his services, and while the A’s also met with older slugger Lance Berkman, Dunn would be the sexier, more potent addition.

The A’s - who finished with the second-fewest home runs in the league last year, with 109 - are in the market for power, and that will only become a more pressing need in the event that they non-tender Jack Cust. Dunn is the most powerful hitter on the market, and the kind of guy who can change a lineup on his own. Whether the A’s are willing to go as high as Dunn is seeking in terms of years and salary has yet to be seen, but there’s no doubt that they’re at least considering the possibility.

It’s unclear just how quickly or slowly Dunn’s market will move. A few years ago he didn’t sign a contract until February, and he won’t want to end up in that position again, as there are a number of free agent first basemen who could take potential jobs.
