Late Monday night, free agent lefty Cliff Lee signed with the Phillies, catching everyone off guard by turning down both the Rangers and the Yankees. It was a move that vaulted the Phillies’ World Series odds into top territory, and it was a move that forced the Rangers and Yankees to turn to their Plan B’s.
Matt Garza The Target Of Rangers Trade Attempt
And one of those Plan B’s for the Rangers? None other than Matt Garza. According to a source, the Rangers moved quickly after missing out on Lee and made a strong Monday push to get Garza from the Rays, but the deal wound up falling through for some unknown reason.
It’s unclear what the Rangers were offering the Rays in return for the 27-year-old righty, but Garza’s price tag is high. The number two starter has a career ERA of 3.97, and remains under team control for another three seasons. He’s just one of the pitchers the Rangers will look at now as fallback options, along with Zack Greinke and Carl Pavano and probably others as well.
Now that Lee’s off the board and the Rangers and Yankees remain in the market for help, expect the Matt Garza trade rumors - and the trade rumors and negotiations for other pitchers as well - to begin making progress.
