Earlier Sunday night, word spread quickly of a developing Shaun Marcum trade that would send the righty starting pitcher from the Blue Jays to the Brewers in exchange for prospects. The trade hasn’t gone down yet, but Jon Morosi hears the name of one guy who could be on the way to Toronto.
Shaun Marcum Trade To Brewers Reportedly Includes Brett Lawrie
According to Morosi, the key piece going back to the Blue Jays is top Brewers prospect Brett Lawrie. Lawrie is a 20-year-old second baseman out of British Columbia who spent last season with AA Huntsville, batting .285 with eight home runs and a .797 OPS. For a player to be able to hold his own against advanced AA competition at such a young age is a tremendous indicator of future success.
Lawrie entered the year as Baseball America’s #59 prospect in the league, and is sure to find himself ranked higher in the forthcoming edition of the rankings. He was the Brewers’ first-round draft pick in 2008 - selected 16th overall - and runs well with good bat speed. The big question concerns his defense, and many scouts predict he’ll end up in the outfield, but his bat could and should be good enough to take him to the Majors.
