Infielder Felipe Lopez has had a rough 2010 season and was just released by the Cardinals. Not deterred, however, the Padres have swooped in and placed a waiver claim. The reason? Even though Lopez wouldn't be playoff-eligible, and likely wouldn't be a part of the team's plans in 2011, the Padres are currently just a half-game back of their division and the Wild Card, and recently lost utility guy Jerry Hairston Jr. for the year due to a fractured tibia. There's only so much Lopez would be able to do over the few remaining games in the regular season, but depth is depth, and a team in the Padres' position will take any help it can get.
