    Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies Nearing Mammoth Contract Extension Agreement

    According to Troy Renck and Gonzalez’s publicist, Gonzalez has agreed to a seven-year extension with the Rockies worth a total of $80 million. He will travel to Colorado this week for a physical exam, after which the extension will be officially announced.

    Gonzalez’s contract comes at a lower price than Tulowitzki’s because he is signing it earlier in his career. Gonzalez has just over two years of Major League service time, and wasn’t set to become a free agent until after the 2014 season. Now, he’s being signed through 2017, meaning that the Rockies are buying out three years of free agency. This had been something of a hangup, as Gonzalez is represented by Scott Boras and Boras usually likes his players to enter the market, but most rules have exceptions.
