Last season, at the age of 24, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez took his game to the next level, batting .336 with a .974 OPS. He and teammate Troy Tulowitzki all but carried the team on their backs in the second half of the year, and after Tulowitzki signed a seven-year contract extension earlier in the offseason, it now appears that Gonzalez is set to do just about the exact same thing.
Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies Nearing Mammoth Contract Extension Agreement
According to Troy Renck and Gonzalez’s publicist, Gonzalez has agreed to a seven-year extension with the Rockies worth a total of $80 million. He will travel to Colorado this week for a physical exam, after which the extension will be officially announced.
Gonzalez’s contract comes at a lower price than Tulowitzki’s because he is signing it earlier in his career. Gonzalez has just over two years of Major League service time, and wasn’t set to become a free agent until after the 2014 season. Now, he’s being signed through 2017, meaning that the Rockies are buying out three years of free agency. This had been something of a hangup, as Gonzalez is represented by Scott Boras and Boras usually likes his players to enter the market, but most rules have exceptions.
It seems like it’s only a matter of time before the Rockies hold a press conference to announce another big deal. For more, check out Purple Row.
