Jon Garland Injury Knocks Dodgers Pitcher Out For 4-6 Weeks

During a Cactus League game against the Mariners on Wednesday afternoon, Dodgers starter Jon Garland had to come out after sustaining an injury that was later revealed to be a strained oblique. Now, via MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, we have a timetable.

Dodgers starter Jon Garland said on Thursday an MRI confirmed that he has a strained oblique muscle. It is expected to sideline him from four to six weeks, meaning he would start the regular season on the disabled list.

This is a tough break for the Dodgers, and for Garland, who has never missed a start in his Major League career. Garland’s holding out some hope that he’ll be fine by Opening Day, but the likelihood of that happening is really quite low.

Garland’s injury is neither major nor minor, and he says it doesn’t bother him when he’s standing still. However, it hurts when he moves his core area, and he’ll need to let this heal completely before he thinks about pitching in a game, lest the injury recur.

The Dodgers are expected to replace Garland for as long as he's out with either John Ely or Tim Redding.
