On Saturday, Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto had to leave a start early with discomfort in his forearm. It was his second consecutive start spent fighting through the same kind of discomfort, and while the Reds didn't express too much concern, they scheduled Cueto to visit with team medical director Tim Kremchek.

Well, Kremchek has spoken. And in a bit of a surprise, Cueto has been diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. How that might’ve caused pain in his forearm, I haven’t a clue, but Kremchek’s the medical professional and I’m just some guy. In response, the Reds intend to shut Cueto down for at least a week and then go from there, looking to get him back onto a throwing program.
Because of the injury, Cueto's not going to begin the regular season in the starting rotation. The Reds will be fronted by Edinson Volquez, and he'll be followed by Homer Bailey, Bronson Arroyo, Travis Wood, and Mike Leake. When Cueto's able to return, Leake is the most likely candidate to get bumped.
