Just a few days ago, Giants closer Brian Wilson was diagnosed with a strained oblique. It didn’t appear to be major, and an MRI showed that nothing was torn, but still, Wilson was forced to the sideline.
Brian Wilson Oblique Injury Still A Factor; Opening Day In Doubt
Wilson said that he’d be back by Opening Day, and he was scheduled to resume throwing on Wednesday. Now, though, he’s experienced a bit of a setback, according to Andrew Baggarly:
Bad news on Brian Wilson's oblique. Tried to play catch but "didn't feel as good as we hoped he would, so we backed him off," Bochy said.
By backing Wilson off, the Giants ensured that he didn't make his injury worse. However, the team didn't anticipate that it'd still be nagging, meaning that Wilson's recovery is behind schedule. What that means is that he's almost certain to miss Opening Day, and while he should become available soon after that, the Giants will probably have to go at least a few games with an interim closer.
