I'm heartened to read that Jorge Posada is willing to play for another club next season, if that's what it takes. I like to see players play for as long as they're able to play, particularly players who have meant as much to the game as Posada. Kevin Kernan (via the Post):
Yankees’ Posada Willing To Play For Another Team
Posada's four-year, $52.4 million deal comes to an end after this season. But if Posada is successful as a full-time DH -- with talk of him occasionally filling in at first base -- the Yankees could bring him back for an encore.
Posada is going to play the hand dealt to him and see where he stands.
I didn’t realize until just now how little value the Yankees have received -- rather, are likely going to wind up receiving -- for their $52.4 million.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan. But when he signed that four-year contract, the unanimous opinion among my ilk was that $54 million was just too much. And indeed, according to FanGraphs Posada’s been worth only $28 million in the first three years of the deal. Even in a best-case 2011 scenario, he’s going to fall well short of $54 million.
Of course, none of that really matters to the Yankees. They needed a catcher, and even a good season from Posada in 2008 wouldn’t have been enough to get the Yanks into the playoffs.
It’s hard to see him playing for the Yankees in 2012, if only because they’ll need the DH slot to spell A-Rod and Captain Captain. And of course it’s far from clear that Posada will hit enough this season to earn a real job with another club next winter.
All we can do is hope.
