On Thursday, we learned that Astros starting catcher Jason Castro had a torn meniscus in his knee that would require Friday surgery. That was already bad enough, as the operation would keep Castro out for quite some time. But on Friday morning, the situation got worse:
Jason Castro Has Torn ACL, Undergoes Surgery
Astros catcher Jason Castro will miss nearly the entire 2011 season after being diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, in addition to the medial meniscus tear he suffered while stepping awkwardly on first base on Wednesday.
The torn ACL wasn’t part of the original report, but it’s clearly the more serious of the two problems, and as the article says, Castro’s going to miss most of, if not the entire season. There’s a chance he’ll be able to get back into some games in September, but as a catcher, he has to be careful about rushing back on his knee.
For now, the Astros are down to Humberto Quintero and J.R. Towles as catchers on the 40-man roster. They also have a handful of minor leaguers and non-roster invitees who could enter the competition, and the team isn't shutting the door on the possibility that it will look outside the organization for help.
