Aaron Cook Makes Return To Rockies Rotation

It's been a long time since the Colorado Rockies have seen Aaron Cook. The righty sinkerballer struggled with shoulder tendinitis and a broken finger that knocked him out for the first two months of the season. The Rockies plodded along while Cook rested up and made some minor-league rehab appearances. Finally, Cook is set to make his Major League season debut Wednesday night.

Cook will face the Padres in San Diego, where starting pitchers are given a choice between eight innings of two-run ball and a mystery box. So Cook will either throw eight innings of two-run ball, or he'll opt for the box. Over 28-2/3 innings of rehab work between double-A and triple-A, Cook allowed 18 runs, with 18 strikeouts and five walks. His groundball rate was healthy, indicating that his sinker is still sinking.

Exactly how the Rockies’ rotation will accommodate Cook is currently up in the air. Cook is taking Juan Nicasio’s rotation slot, but Nicasio could stick at the expense of Clayton Mortensen. Neither has excelled over eight combined starts.
