Manny Machado injury: Orioles 3B will not need surgery

Machado’s original diagnosis was confirmed as he will need 6-8 weeks before attempting to run.

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado visited Dr. James Andrews this week and was told that he will not need surgery on his torn medial patellar ligament.

Instead, Machado will only need rest and rehabilitation over the offseason, reports Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Andrews’ diagnosis confirms the team orthopedist’s original opinion on the injury.

Machado will work on rehabbing his knee for the next 6-8 weeks. The hope is that he could then test out the injury with light running. He is still expected to be ready in time for spring training.

He originally suffered the injury on Sept. 23 after his knee buckled while running out an infield single. An MRI showed the extent of the injury, which all-in-all ended up being somewhat fortunate. Had he torn an ACL or MCL, Machado could have been out for 8-12 months.

Machado, 21, finished the season with a 746 OPS while earning recognition as one of the premiere defensive players in baseball.
