Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will have reconstructive surgery on the medial patellofemoral ligament of his left knee on Oct. 14, and is expected to need four to six months for recovery.

    His decision to undergo surgery changes that time to six-to-eight months and could cost him most of spring training as well as the beginning of the 2014 season. Machado will undergo the surgery on Monday, Ghiroli reports.

    The 21-year-old Machado was a key contributor for the Orioles in 2013, leading the American League in doubles with 51 and hitting .283/.314/.432 in his first full season with the team.

    Instead, Machado will only need rest and rehabilitation over the offseason, reports Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Andrews’ diagnosis confirms the team orthopedist’s original opinion on the injury.

    Machado will work on rehabbing his knee for the next 6-8 weeks. The hope is that he could then test out the injury with light running. He is still expected to be ready in time for spring training.
