The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have both had scoring opportunities, but failed to plate any runners, leaving the game tied at 0-0 through two innings.

Jon Lester retired the first two Tigers hitters of the game before Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder laced back-to-back singles, putting two runners on for Victor Martinez. Martinez worked a full count against Lester, but grounded out to Stephen Drew to end the inning.
Anibal Sanchez had an eventful bottom half of the first, striking out four batters. Shane Victorino struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt, but Alex Avila could not handle the pitch, allowing Avila to reach base on a dropped third strike.
David Ortiz recorded the second out of the inning on a close call; the third base umpire rung him up on a check swing following an appeal. Ortiz disagreed with the call, but his bat appeared to travel just a little too far over the plate:
Sanchez became the first pitcher since Orval Overall in 1908 to strike out four in the first inning of a postseason game.
Lester responded with a perfect bottom of the second, recording two strikeouts of his own to give him four through two frames.
Will Middlebrooks became the first Red Sox hitter to not strike out or draw a walk, hitting a one-out flyout to Jhonny Peralta in left field in the second inning. Sanchez issued a pair of walks, but Ellsbury grounded out to Jose Iglesias to end the threat.
