With the Red Sox still trailing the Tigers, 1-0, heading to the top of the fifth, Clay Buchholz put together a quick inning against the bottom of Detroit's order and picked up his sixth strikeout of the night.
Tigers vs. Red Sox score update, ALCS Game 2: 5-0 Tigers, Bottom 6
The Tigers score four runs to extend their lead to 5-0 and drive Clay Buchholz from the game.
Buchholz's counterpart, Max Scherzer, almost gave Red Sox fans something to cheer about, offering up his hardest-hit ball of the night to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The Red Sox backstop drove a ball to the warning track in right field, but the ball nestled in Torii Hunter's glove for yet another out. Scherzer again sent the Red Sox back to the dugout in order in the fifth, registering his ninth strikeout of the evening in the process.
Miguel Cabrera took the air out of the Fenway faithful in the sixth inning, as he smashed a one-out, solo home run off of Buchholz to extend Detroit's lead to 2-0:
Prince Fielder followed the homer with a long drive of his own, smacking a double off of the Green Monster. Victor Martinez, who was plunked in his previous at-bat, made Buchholz pay with a double of his own, scoring Fielder and putting the Tigers up, 3-0.
Alex Avila, who drove in Detroit's first run of the game, started to put the game out of reach for Boston by driving a ball over the bullpens in right-center field, adding two more runs to the scoreboard.
After allowing a single to Omar Infante, Red Sox manager John Farrell pulled Buchholz in favor of rookie Brandon Workman, who worked the Red Sox out of further trouble by getting Austin Jackson to ground out to end the inning.
