At one time, it seemed as though the Detroit Tigers would cruise to an easy 2-0 ALCS lead over the Boston Red Sox. However, after David Ortiz ignited the Sox with a game-tying grand slam late in Game 2, Boston has looked untouchable, downing Tigers ace Justin Verlander in a 1-0 pitchers' duel in Game 3 to grab a 2-1 series lead. The Tigers will look to even the series at two apiece in Game Four.
The first three games of the ALCS have been dominated by strikeout artists and masterful starting pitching performances. However, Game 4 promises to put the defenses on their toes, as groundballer Doug Fister toes the rubber against Jake Peavy and the Red Sox.
Fister, who allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings against the Oakland Athletics in his lone ALDS start, is not known for whiffing batters; he only struck out 6.9 batters per nine innings during the regular season. Instead, he will rely on his defense, as Fister recorded 54.3 percent of his regular-season outs on the ground.
Peavy, who arrived in Boston from the Chicago White Sox in a three-team deadline trade, allowed one run on five hits in 5⅔ innings in his only ALDS start against the Tampa Bay Rays. He saw his strikeout rate dip by more than two whiffs per nine innings following his change of socks, will rely on his outfielders to snag deep flies around Comerica.
