MLB coaching roundup: Matt Williams, Rick Adair and Larry Rothschild
The season may be over for most teams, but that does not mean the news stops flowing.

Williams has long been a respected name in baseball, first as a terrific third baseman and now as a third base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals have clearly been paying attention, as they have brought him in to interview for their managerial vacancy following the exit of Davey Johnson, per MLB Trade Rumors.
If Williams lands the job, it would be his first gig as a manager in MLB.
Larry Rothschild returning
The New York Yankees and pitching coach Larry Rothschild have agreed to terms on a new contract, although no details have been made public yet, tweets Adam Kilgore. Rothschild has been with the Yankees in this capacity since replacing Dave Eiland back in 2010.
Rothschild has done a solid job with New York, although this season was a bit below expectation. It certainly did not help getting a bad season out of CC Sabathia and an injury-plagued campaign from Andy Pettitte. Overall, the Yankees finished eighth in American League team ERA with a 3.94 mark.
Rick Adair departing
Unlike Rothschild, the Baltimore Orioles pitching coach Rick Adair will not return for the 2014 season, according to MASNsports.com. It is unclear who will succeed Adair in the position, although it is not thought to be bullpen coach Bill Castro, who filled in this season for Adair when he left the team to be with his sick father.
Baltimore’s pitching struggled throughout the year, compiling a 4.20 ERA, the worst of any team that finished with a winning record.
Joyner, Samuel re-up with Phillies
Assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner and base coach Juan Samuel will return to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014, per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. Next season will mark Samuel’s fourth season on the Phillies’ coaching staff, and Joyner’s second.
The news marks a change of heart for Joyner, who announced two weeks ago he’d be leaving his post in the hopes of moving on to bigger and better things -- likely the open Angels hitting coach position. Now that fellow Halos legend Don Baylor has taken on that position, however, Joyner has opted to return to Philadelphia for another season.
Rangers interview Jamie Quirk
The Texas Rangers have interviewed Jamie Quirk for their open bench-coach position, reports Jerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.
Quirk, 58, has served as the Chicago Cubs bench coach for the last two years. Now that manager Dale Sveum has gotten the ax, though, Quirk may be looking to settle into a bench-coach job elsewhere.
Quirk has some ties to Texas. He was the club’s bullpen coach back in 2002 and was a member of the Rockies coaching staff back when Jon Daniels and Thad Levine were with the organization.
