The top of the third inning started off in highlight-reel form. David Ortiz popped an Anibal Sanchez offering to short right field. Jose Iglesias, sprinting out from second base, where he had been positioned for a shift, made a last-second stab at the ball after a long sprint to record the out.

Despite Iglesias' web gem, Sanchez did not escape the third inning unscathed. Mike Napoli smacked a ground-rule double to left field, advanced to third on a Jonny Gomes groundout, and with Stephen Drew batting, scored on a wild pitch, giving Boston a 4-0 lead.
Jon Lester worked quickly through the heart of the Tigers' order in the third, sending Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera, and Prince Fielder back to the dugout on just nine pitches while picking up his second strikeout of the game.
Jose Iglesias' defensive wizardry showed up again in the fourth inning. With one out and a man on, Dustin Pedroia grounded to second baseman Omar Infante. Iglesias corraled Infante's throw, stepped on second, and fired to first for the double play.
Lester ran into trouble in the fourth inning, but like his former teammate, Iglesias, Lester's glove saved him. After allowing a Victor Martinez single and issuing a walk to Omar Infante, Lester faced off against Brayan Pena with one out. Pena hit a high chopper back to the mound, which Lester gloved and tossed to Drew, who stepped on second and threw on to first baseman Napoli to complete the double play.
