Neither the Boston Red Sox or the Detroit Tigers scored any runs during the first two innings of the game, leaving the score tied at 0-0 heading into the top of the third.

The Tigers set a record for strikeouts by a starting rotation in the bottom of the second.

Torii Hunter led off the top of the first with an infield single, smacking a sharp grounder off Xander Bogaerts' glove. Clay Buchholz quickly recovered, striking out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder before forcing Victor Martinez to flyout for the third out of the inning.
Buchholz took plenty of time between pitches, and the top of the first seemed to drag. Jonah Keri of Grantland monitored how long the right-hander took to face four batters:

Max Scherzer retired the first two hitters of the inning before Dustin Pedroia slapped a two-out single. David Ortiz followed with a walk, but Mike Napoli hit a sharp groundout to Jose Iglesias to end the frame.
Buchholz surrendered a two-out single to Infante, but otherwise worked a clean top of the second.
Scherzer struck out the side in the bottom of the second, giving Tigers' starters 51 strikeouts in the ALCS so far. That sets a new record for strikeouts by a starting rotation in a LCS series, breaking a record set by the Atlanta Braves in 1991.
