The Milwaukee Brewers have placed infielders Mat Gamel and Taylor Green on the waiver wire, a source has told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. The pair can clear waivers on Thursday, at which point they'd be removed from the Brewers' 40-man roster.

Neither Gamel nor Green saw any big-league playing time in 2013. The 28-year-old Gamel had the starting first baseman gig all to himself had he stayed healthy, but he tore the ACL in his right knee yet again during the team’s first full workout of Spring Training.
Green, who was behind Gamel on the first base depth chart, suffered a similar fate a little later in the spring. The 26-year-old injured his hip and required season-ending surgery, leading to an entire year of "Yuniesky Betancourt: starting first baseman."
Though Gamel hasn’t played in a regular season game since 2011 and has just 269 career big-league plate appearances to his name, he would have been arbitration-eligible this winter had the Brewers kept him on the roster, so his removal saves the Brewers some money. Green, on the other hand, does not have the same extensive roster time that Gamel has, so there’s a better chance Milwaukee will re-sign him to a minor-league pact.
If/when the duo does clear the waiver wire Thursday, the Brewers’ roster will drop to 38 players. It will likely stay there until Nov. 1, when Corey Hart, Betancourt, et al. will officially hit free agency.
