The Boston Red Sox have announced that Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, according to the team's official Twitter account. The left-hander also started Opening Day in April, Game 1 of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays, and Game 1 of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers, so the news is not surprising. The Cardinals announced on Sunday that their ace, Adam Wainwright, will start in the series opener.

Lester, 29, enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2013. He posted a career-worst 4.82 ERA in 2012, but shaved a run off of that total this year (3.75) while setting a career-high in innings pitched (213⅓). In three postseason starts this fall, he has thrown 19⅓ innings with a 2.33 ERA and 14 strikeouts. His only loss in the 2013 playoffs came in ALCS Game 1, when he allowed just one run in 6⅓ innings while his teammates failed to record a hit until the ninth inning. This will be the fifth time that Lester has started Game 1 of a playoff series; in addition to the ALDS and ALCS this year, he also took the hill in the openers of the ALDS in both 2008 and 2009. He is 2-2 in those four Game 1 starts.
The Red Sox will not make any more roster announcements today as they acquaint themselves with the Cardinals, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal. The series kicks off on Wednesday at 8:07 p.m. ET on Fox.
