Matt Kemp injury: Dodgers star expected to be ready for Opening Day

After missing the postseason, Matt Kemp had ankle surgery on Monday.

USA TODAY Sports

Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp underwent surgery on his ankle to remove torn cartilage, according to a report from Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Kemp was limited to 73 games this season. He missed all of the postseason due to the ankle injury, which he suffered in late July. Kemp sprained his ankle during a collision at home plate, and while he initially said he didn’t think the sprain was bad, he missed close to two months. He returned to play 11 games in September before being shut down. According Hernandez’s report, Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache feared Kemp could break a major weight-bearing bone in his foot if he continued to play.

The procedure on his ankle will limit Kemp during the offseason, but he is expected to be ready by opening day, according to his agent Dave Stewart.

“We’re anticipating he’ll be ready for the season,” Stewart said, via the Los Angeles Times.

According to Stewart, Kemp won’t be able to put any weight on his foot for a month and will be limited for at least a month after that. This is the second consecutive season Kemp has had a major procedure done during the offseason. He had shoulder surgery last offseason.
