The Philadelphia Phillies are closing in on hiring an analytics expert to help the team better make player evaluations, reports MLB.com.
Phillies close to hiring analytics expert
Though he does not believe such a hiring would have helped the team in their past deals, Amaro wants to use any tools available.

Though the Phillies have not been heavily invested in sabermetrics in the past, general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. is opening up to the idea more. Amaro says “we owe it to ourselves” to pursue any option that might help the team make better decisions on players in the future.
“I think it’s just a matter of getting more information,” Amaro told reporters. “I don’t know if it’s going to change the way we do business, necessarily. We still plan to be a scouting and player development organization, but I think it’s important to get all the information and analyze not just what we’re doing, but how other clubs are evaluating players when we talk about possible trades and other sorts of things.”
Amaro says that he does not believe any recent decisions on players signings or trades would have been different had the team used more analytics. He does, however, wants to be sure the team is using all the tools available to them.
