The Los Angeles Dodgers officially announced the signing of Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero to a four-year deal on Tuesday. It had previously been reported that the contract would be worth $28 million.

General manager Ned Colletti says Guerrero will have an opportunity to earn a starting job out of spring training and help the club right away.

“We feel Alexander can be an offensive infielder and a solid everyday player,” said Colletti. “We’re looking forward to him competing for a middle infield position and becoming a key contributor in 2014.”

Coletti said Monday the team would like to get Guerrero into a winter league as soon as possible. Guerrero has not played since the 2011-12 Cuban league season, citing "lack of motivation" after not being named to the national roster for the World Baseball Classic.

In his final season in the Cuban league, Guerrero hit .290/.402/.576 and was known for his power as a middle infielder. Over his last three seasons, he launched 60 home runs over 886 at-bats.

The Dodgers are expected to try Guerrero as a second baseman while Hanley Ramirez continues to handle shortstop duties.

Pitcher Peter Moylan was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Guerrero.
