The 2013 MLB season is nearing an end, but the most important series of the year remains. The NL Champion St. Louis Cardinals and AL Champion Boston Red Sox will play one final best-of-seven series to determine who is the best in the MLB. Game 1 of the World Series begins Wednesday night.

World Series preview
There's no scrappy, underdog story here. This is the Cardinals vs. Red Sox, equipped with the best records in baseball, each looking for their third title this century. Adam Wainwright will start for the Cardinals as they look to get off to a roaring start. If not for Clayton Kershaw, Wainwright would have a shot at a Cy Young award in 2013 after making 34 excellent starts. He led the league with just under 242 innings pitched while posting a 2.94 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and striking out 219 batters. Wainwright was the leader of what became an extremely young rotation in St. Louis.
His excellent season has continued into the playoffs. In two NLDS starts against the Pirates, he allowed just two runs over 16 innings. The Pirates managed 12 baserunners, but struck out 15 times against Wainwright. He made one outing against the Dodgers and held them to two runs over seven innings.
For the Red Sox, Jon Lester is slated to start Game 1. Like Wainwright, Lester has been spectacular in the postseason, making three starts and allowing just five runs in nearly 20 innings. After a dreadful 2012 season, Lester came back in 2013 to be one of the best pitchers on the Red Sox staff. He made 32 starts and posted a 3.75 ERA and 1.29 WHIP
The World Series commences Wednesday night and will be broadcast on television by FOX and on radio by ESPN. First pitch is scheduled for 8:07 p.m. ET.
