Wainwright surrendered a total of four runs in his first three postseason starts before the Red Sox pinned five on him on Wednesday in St. Louis' 8-1 loss. The opposing starter, Jon Lester, worked into the eighth inning without allowing a run in the latest of what has been a solid string of playoff performances.
Wacha has been even better than Wainwright in three postseason starts, allowing only one run in 21 innings of work. He has 22 strikeouts against three unintentional walks and has given up a mere eight hits.
Boston's Game 2 starter, John Lackey, is no stranger to being in the shadow of the opposing starter during the 2013 postseason. Lackey went up against Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price in the ALDS and came out on top despite allowing four runs in 5⅓ innings.
Lackey's competition stiffened in the next round when he faced Detroit Tigers star hurler Justin Verlander in Game 3 of the ALCS. The 35-year-old Texan stepped up once again, tossing 6⅔ scoreless innings while allowing only four hits and striking out eight in Boston's 1-0 victory.
Joe Buck and Tim McCarver will be in the booth for first pitch, which is slated for 8:07 p.m. ET.
