The St. Louis Cardinals will send right-hander Joe Kelly to the mound to take on Jake Peavy and the Red Sox in Game 3 at Busch Stadium on Saturday, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
2013 World Series: Cardinals name Joe Kelly Game 3 starter
There was never much question about who would take the hill for the Cards on Saturday, but now it’s official.
Kelly has been the Cards' No. 3 starter all postseason, so there was never much doubt that he'd get the call for Saturday's game. Many fans have called for the club to get Shelby Miller back into the rotation, but seeing as he's thrown all of one inning since Sept. 25, it seems unlikely that the team would throw him back into the mix during the World Series.
Kelly, 25, has pitched fairly well in his three postseason starts this month. The right-hander has two no-decisions and a loss to show for his work, but his six innings of two-run ball at home against Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS was key in getting St. Louis to where they are now.
With Kelly pitching on Saturday, the door is potentially open for Adam Wainwright to take the mound on short rest for Game 4. Per Goold, manager Mike Matheny said that when Waino pitches all depends on where the series stands after Kelly's start.
