Cardinals vs. Red Sox, 2013 World Series Game 2 final score: St. Louis rallies for 4-2 victory

The St. Louis Cardinals scored twice in the seventh inning with the help of a throwing error by Boston Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow en route to a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday.

Breslow, who was summoned after John Lackey was pulled with a 2-1 lead and one out in the inning, made an ill-advised throw to third base after the Cardinals had already scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Matt Carpenter. The throw sailed over the head of Stephen Drew and bounced into the stands, allowing Jon Jay to trot home with the go-ahead run.

Daniel Descalso, who was standing on first base when the play began, advanced to third and scored on Carlos Beltran's single in the next at-bat.

The events of the seventh inning spoiled a solid start from Lackey as well as another potentially iconic home run off the bat of David Ortiz.

Ortiz deposited a changeup from Michael Wacha over the Green Monster with one out in the sixth inning to get the Red Sox on the board and give them a brief advantage. The homer, which was Ortiz's second in as many nights, snapped a string of 19 scoreless postseason innings for the rookie hurler.

The home run was Ortiz's 17th in his postseason career, tying him with Jim Thome for seventh place on the all-time list.

The Cardinals bullpen, led by rookie Carlos Martinez, was instrumental in the Cardinals' win. Martinez struck out three batters and allowed only one hit in two scoreless innings in relief of Wacha, who walked as many batters (four) on Thursday as he did in his first three postseason starts.
